One and a half years ago we sold our stallion Draumur frá Vorsabæ 2 to Nadja Andreewitch in Sweden. Draumur was born 2012 and is son by Kolbrún and Spuni frá Vesturkoti. Nadja has sent us many photos of Draumur and is very happy with him. This year he had 24 mares and he was the fifth most popular stallion in Sweden to breed with mares of a total of 198 stallions! Draumur was trained last autumn and is promising, well tempered and shows high action.

This year we sold many horses from our farm. It is always important for us that the new owners are happy with their horses and it is constantly our aim to find the best horse for each person. We sold the horses to Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Spain and of course in Iceland.

We have started to train the young horses who will turn 4 years old. Six of the seven are offsprings by Hreyfill and they are very promising, calm, beautiful with high movements. Then we have Kappi frá Vorsabæ 2 who is son of Kinnskær frá Selfossi (8,25) and Snerpa. He is an interesting 5-gaited gelding and well built. We are also training some of the older horses now after their autumn break.

Sigurbjörg Bára has arrived back home after being in France for the last 7 weeks. She stayed at the icelandic-horsebreeding farm Schlossmatt. The owners are Sophie and Martin who we have known very well for many years. This was a great oppurtunity and experience for Sigurbjörg to get to know french culture and also how everything is with the icelandic-horse in France. Last week she took part in the big horse show Equita Lyon in France. The show is held every year where all the horse types are shown and it is for 5 days in 6 ridinghalls.
Sigurbjörg, along with some french people presented the icelandic horse at Equita-Lyon. What made this also very special for Sigurbjörg, was that she showed the stallion Stirnir frá Vorsabæ 2 who was bred on our farm.
Sigurbjörg says: „I could see that the icelandic horse really attracted the attention from the audiences, the audience was smiling and clapping for us in the shows. I saw that the people knew that the icelandic horse is a special horse. I heard them saying „Look! There is the icelandic horse!“ The people did not see „a little pony“, they saw The fantastic Icelandic horse. I think it is a good oppurtunity to present the icelandic horse at Equita-Lyon so the people can see how much the icelandic horse has to offer. People came to us in the stables and they were curious about the icelandic horse and wanted to learn more.“

Jón Emil our son has arrived back in Iceland after being in America for 2 months with his music band. He has been living in Reykjavík the last years and now he has moved to our farm and will be working here and start school in Selfoss. His girlfriend, Celina Schneider has also moved to Vorsabær 2 and has started to work on our farm again. She was working here the last summer and after that she worked on another farm in North-Iceland. It is nice to have them both back home and we always have enough for them to do on the farm. Every year at this time we clean and wash our whole stable and this year it was time to paint it also.

We the couple, Björn and Stefanía, went to Faroe-Islands for the first time and we were there for 5 days. It is not often that we travel to other places, because we don‘t have much time for that and we need someone to look after our animals on the farm. Our daughter Margrét and her husband Kiddi wanted to look after our farm and they did the farmer‘s role fantastically. We decided to travel now to celebrate Björn‘s big birthday and also because everything is more quiet at this time of year. It certainly it was a great trip and we were lucky with the weather.

Sigurbjörg Bára has been training her mare Eva frá Vorsabæ 2, which we gave her as a graduation and birthday gift when Eva was a foal. Eva is 5 years old now and is the first offspring by Evíta. When Sigurbjörg and Evíta where both young, they had many good moments together and for example competed often with great results. The father of Eva is Hlekkur frá Lækjamóti, son of Álfur frá Selfossi. Eva is a great mare with high movements and it will be nice to see them together in the future.

This summer was a great success for our stallions Forseti and Hreyfill. Forseti is now 19 years old and he got 18 mares to cover with last summer. 100% of his mares are confirmed pregnant.
Hreyfill had many mares last summer and 90% of all his mares are confirmed pregnant.
Both Forseti and Hreyfill have facebook sites and you can see more about it here: https://www.facebook.com/forsetivorsabae2/ https://www.facebook.com/hreyfillvorsabae2/

It is a tradition in Iceland in the beginning of September every year to have „réttir“. Réttir is sheep round-up and one of them is held close to our farm. The sheeps stay up in the mountains over the whole summer and in September some people gather them together and réttir is held. The farmers and owners of the sheep take them home at this day. However, we keep our sheep on our fields and not in the mountains, but we always ride to réttir every year to meet the people and have fun! Sigurbjörg Bára went up to the mountains before réttir and helped with gathering the sheep. She took the mares Hrefna and Þrá with her and she thought it was a really nice experience!

The name of the music band is Dynfari and they will play there the next two months, so they will see many different things. This will be a great experience for him and his partners and a lot of driving. We hope that America will be nice to the band Dynfari and we look forward to seeing Jón Emil again.

There was a lot to do with our accommodation and country life visits. Many of our guests who rent our cottage like to walk around the farm and look at the animals and many of them also like to go horse back riding. Some other people contact us and want to look at our farm and the animals and book a riding tour. We are lucky with our horses that we have for our guests, they are well trained and are calm and easy. We have bred them all and we have known them since they were born. We have horses for both inexperienced as well for experienced riders.
We provide personal service. We always begin inside our ridinghall where we teach our guests all the basics about riding and the people can get to know the horses. Then we go outside for a riding tour in the beautiful nature and ride the famous gate, that the icelandic horse is known for: Tölt!
Here you can see some photos from our riding tours this year.

Today the last foal of the year came into the world. Evíta had her foal and it is a black stallion-foal, the father is the high judged stallion Trymbill frá Stóra-Ási. Evíta was with another stallion last summer but it turned out later that his sperm did not work. So after that, late in the summer, we decided to breed Evíta with Trymbill and that‘s why her foal came so late this year. The foal is pretty and shows both trot and tölt.

We took many hand horses with us and we were riding for 3 days. We slept one night in a cottage up in the mountains where we cooked salmon for dinner and had a great time.

This summer we went two times to the village Sólheimar with two horses. There was an open-door day and many people of all ages could get together and have fun. We took our wonderful mares, Spóla and Drottning, who are used to seeing many different things and are easy and calm for everyone. Some of the people were riding horses for the first time and it was a great pleasure to introduce them to the horses.

We have some young promising stallions. One of them is Vitnir frá Vorsabæ 2 chestnut with two stars 4 years old, he is son by Kolbrún and the 1.price stallion Kjarni frá Þjóðólfshaga. He is beautiful and has very big and smooth movements. Vitnir was trained last winter and he was easy to handle and positive to learn. He is a fourgaiter and the tölt is easy for him.

We have many horses in training this summer and it is going well. We are only training the horses that we breed and own. We like to train our 4 year old horses in the summertime and we have trained them now from the beginning of June and it is going well. We are also training older horses and then we also have experienced horses for our customers. We have great trainers this summer, these are Nanna Jessen from Denmark, Celina Schneider from Germany and our daughter Sigurbjörg Bára.

We sold two horses to Spain for the first time. The horses are; Bassi frá Vorsabæ 2 , his mother is Baka frá Bár and the father is Forseti. The other one is Blíða frá Vorsabæ 2 , her mother is Gola frá Bár and the father is Forseti. They are both 4 years old and were trained a little bit last autumn where we got to know them better. Before Blíða left Iceland, she was covered with our stallion Kappi frá Vorsabæ 2, who is son by first price parents; Snerpa and Kinnskær frá Selfossi. The owners are Jos and Anique and they think that Blíða‘s foal might be the first icelandic horse to be born in Spain. The future for Blíða and Bassi will be exciting and the owners are happy with them.

While we were looking at Silfurdís‘foal, we saw that Fjöður was starting to have her foal. We got the camera right away and took pictures of this wonderful moment. Fjöður had a black stallion-foal with two stars, he is beautiful with long neck and the father is Hreyfill.

This spring has been quite cold and the grass is not growing well. At this time we usually let our sheep and their lambs go outside, but there is not enough grass for them yet. Most of our sheep have had their lambs now and we decided to make a facility in our ridinghall for them where we feed them hey and the lambs have much space to play. It is also good for the horses to see something new when we are training them in the ridinghall and we can see that the horses like the company.

Our breedingmares continue to have their foals now and today we had three foals. Kolbrún had a stallion, red with a star by Sveinn-Hervar. That makes him a full brother to Evíta and almost a full brother to Hreyfill, because the father by Hreyfill is Dugur frá Þúfu who is son by Sveinn-Hervar. The stallion foal has long legs and he showed us his movements right away! Nös had a black marefoal and she is daughter by Blær frá Miðsitju. The female yearlings went outside on the big field today. We seperated them from their mothers last February and since then they have been inside where we fed them hey. We always train our youngsters a little bit when they are inside the stable and then we get to know them better. We put the halter on them, lead them in the stable, brush them and admire them. Usually in May we have more grass on the fields, but this year it seems to grow slowly so we still have to feed our horses hay outside.

After the first preliminary they were in the 2.place with the point of 7,13. In the finals the day after they were also good, but they did not get a place in the end because there was a little scratch on the leg. But when we count the numbers that Hreyfill got then he would had ended with the point of 7,34 and in the 2.place. She is from Germany and will train the horses the next two months. Sigurbjörg Bára is also working on the farm and training horses, but she is also in school. They are all wonderfully diligent and we are lucky to have them with us.

Sophie and Martin came to us in visit. They live in France on the farm Schlossmatt where they breed icelandic horses. They own a mare and a foal by her on our farm which we are feeding for them. We got to know Sophie in 1993. Then she was working on our farm and since then we have been in good contact with each other.
Sophie and Martin have bought some horses from us over the past years, for example the stallion Stirnir frá Vorsabæ 2. Stirnir is a son by Kolbrún frá Vorsabæ 2 and Stáli frá Kjarri and this year, Stirnir and Sophie were champions in 4-gait in France! We have some offsprings by Stirnir which we are training now and they are all great and some of them will be good competition horses.

We got some photos from Landsmót 2014 from the photographer Jón Björnsson.
Here you can see the photos of Sigurbjörg Bára and Blossi frá Vorsabæ 2. This couple has much experience in competitions and it is always nice to watch them. They came into the B-finals in young adults and then they ended in the 14th place of 84 competitors with a score of 8,40.

After finsihing with the 3 year old colts we started with the mares Mardöll, Eva and Ör. Mardöll is a daughter of Mjölnir from Hlemmiskeið and Kolbrún from Vorsabær, Eva is a daughter of Hlekkur from Lækjamót and Evita from Vorsabær and Ör is a daughter of Hlekkur from Lækjamót and Píla from Vorsabær. The last one Ör was bought by a Norwegian lady when she was only one year old. All the mares went through the same training as the colts and we were very satisfied with the result. All of them showed much progress during the training and we look forward to continue with them next winter.

Last autumn we came across an incubator so we got some hatching eggs to try it. The outcome was quite good we got 13 chicks but we still do not know how many of the are male and how many female. We have had great pleasure in watching their behaviour.

12. November 2013

The annual foal show of Glaumur took place in our indoor arena on the 10. of November. Aorund 80 spectators came to see all the promishing foals. In the mare class Gullbrá from Steinsholt was chosen the most promishing foal. She is sired by Þórólfur from Prestbær and her mother is Tíbrá from Hvítárholt. In the colts class Djarfur from Fjall was in 1st place but he is sired by Djákni from Helluland and his mother is Glódís from Fjall which is a daughter of Forseti from Vorsabær. The spectators got also the opportunity to choose the best foal and they choose Gullbrá from Steinsholt. Our foal Erla sired by Loki from Selfoss and Evíta from Vorsabær got 5th place in the mares class.

After the two girls from Sweden left we kept on training the 3 year old colts. Four of them are sired by Stirnir from Vorsabær who is a son of Stáli from Kjarr but Stirnir was sold to France in 2010. Two colts are sired by Hlekkur from Lækjamót and one sired by Forseti. We take great care in not overdoing them as they are unequally mature and receptive to the training. In the beginning we work a lot with the horses from the ground, we drive them on a small cirkle with the lead rope so they learn how to bend and act to the rope and the stimulus so they will be better prepaired for work under the saddle. When starting the horses under the saddle we ride them along the alleys in the stable. When they have learned to react to the rein we start riding them with togheher with a trained horse in the indoor arena.

7. November 2013

The tourism in Iceland has been growing these past years and prospects for the future are good. The tourist season is also extending into the autumn. But we have to see to that the resort areas are accessible and proper activities for all the tourists. We still had visitors in our guest house at the end of October. On the picture are Swedes who came for a ride and some French people who went riding and enjoyed the Northen lights in the evening.

15. October 2013

We are very satisfied with all the young horses which we trained last autumn. Four of them are sired by Forseti, 1 by Stæll from Neðra-Seli and one by Stáli from Kjarri. All of them are calm and easy to handle and their gaits are promising. Besides these 4 year old horses we have one 4 year old mare which was trained earlier this year. She is sired by Hlekkur from Lækjarmót, a very promising 4 gaiter with high tread.

This summer we mated 13 of our mares 4 of which were new breeding mares. Most of them were together with our stallion Hreyfill but we also used Toppur from Auðsholtshjáleiga, Hrannar from Skeiðvellir and Hrymur from Hof. Silfurdís was mated with Forseti but unfortunately she was not with foal which is quite understandable as she was still recovering from her injury. All the other mares which were with Forseti were with foal and all besides one mare which were with Hreyfill were with foal.

In the autumn we got two students, Anja and Mattilda from Dille Gård working for us. They helped us training the 4 years old horses for the next 5 weeks. By that time all the young horses were fit to ride.

23. August 2013

On the 31st of May Sigurbjörg´s mare Silfurdís was kicked by another horse . We got a veterinary to look at her and the x-ray showed that her left front leg was broken. She got a good treatment and we had to keep her in her box for the next 8 weeks. After that a period of  physiotherapy and walks led by Sigurbjörg took over. In the beginning of September she was ready to go out in the field again. It looks like that Silfurdís has recovered and hopefully Sigurbjörg can begin to ride her next winter.

In the beginning of March we held the annual horse round up at Vorsabær. We had some of our friends and neighbours to help us. We gathered all the horses at the pen next to the stable. Then we took one after another and groomed the mane and tail and cut the hooves. We took some of the young horses in the stable for training and some foals also. We have begun to stable the foals gradually as the mares want to get rid of them. To uur opinion it is best for the foals to grow in the stud up with their mother as long as possible. After a long and pleasant day we all gathered for a barbeque in the evening.

Elin Vidberg came for a visit and stayed with us for a few days. She rode and trained a few horses on our farm. Originally Elin came to us in 2010 as an intern from the horse school Wången in Sweden. She then came back in 2011 and worked with our horses for 3 months. She and her family have bought 4 horses from us, f.ex. the stallion Segull which she uses a lot for competing. Now we collaborate with Elin in horse sales. She also has her own website, see here http://www.evidbergsislandshastar.se/saluhastar for information, photos and videos of horses for sale. Elin can also provide information regarding how export and other related things work, from when the horse leaves Iceland until it reaches it‘s new owners‘ destination.

News  2012

Our grandchild Birnir Snær became 3 years old on the 6th of January. We were invited to his birthday party and brought him an excellent toy truck which he could really appreciate.

Two girls, Erika and Frida from Sweden came to work for us in the middle of January and stayed for two months. Both of them were hard working and we really would have wanted them to stay longer. On the picture they are going for a ride along with Sigurbjörg. All the horses are offsprings of Litla Jorp, Hreyfing sired by Dynur from Hvammi, Forseti sired by Hrafn from Holtsmúla and Hátíð sired by Hrói from Skeiðháholt.

On the 29th of February the Comprehensive high School in Selfoss held a tolt competition for it´s pupils. 32 horses were listed for the competition many of whom were really good. In the finals were 8 horses. Sigurbjörg rode Blossi and ended in 2.-3.place with caracters of 6,80. She also got the rider´s prize which was given by the equestrian store Baldvin and Thorvaldur.

In March we got a visit from two breeding assosiations in our neighborhood. We showed them our new stable and the most promishing young horses in the riding arena. We really enjoy to welcome  enthhusiastic horsebreeders and introduce them to our activities.

Horsebreeders from Hraungerdishrepp.

Last winter the weather was not favourable for horse riding, rain, sleet or snow nearly every day so the riding conditions were not optimal. Although we can ride our young horses in our indoor arena it is necessary to ride them outsite otherwise they get bored. Frida did not let the wether stop her from riding our young stallion outsite. Hreyfill is sired by Dugur from Þúfu and one of our best breeding mares Kolbrún. He is very promishing and we have high hopes for him.

Our cat Kleopatra became 16 years old on the 25. of March so she and our other cats were fed with their favourate food, cream and dried fish.

In April Sigurbjörg was invited to join the local team which takes part in a row of competitions at Fludir. She ended up in 4. place in the first competition with Blossi. In May she she also took part with Blossi and ended up in 8. place. Fairly good good result as she was selected for the team the evening before the competitio so she did not have much time for preparation.

The spring is a thrilling time in Vorsabæ and we receive a lot of visitors to watch when the lambs, kids and the foals are born and to go riding.

The lambing season started on the 6. of May and lasted for three weeks. On the picture is on of our sheep with two new born lambs and one of her sons Tigull which is  5 years old.

This spring we got 10 foals, six males and 4 females. Most of them are sired by our young stallion Hreyfill. We also got foals which are sired by Spuni from Vesturkoti, Arion from Eystra-Fróðholti and Kinnskær from Selfossi.

Last spring we took 3 horses for training and further prepairation  for breeding evaluation. These were the mares Lipurtá and Hátíð and the young stallion Hreyfill. After the training we evaluated the results and decided to train Hreyfill further before showing him for evaluation.

The two mares were taken to breeding evaluation. Lipurtá, which is 5 years was ridden by Sigurður Óli Kristinsson, got the total score of 7,93. For riding abilities she got 7,99 and 7,84 for confirmation. She got hers best caracters, 8,5 for neck, shoulders, tolt, gallop willingness, temperament and slow tolt. Lipurtá is the last offspring of Tign and her father is Hágangur from Narfastöðum.

Hatíð which is 6 years old was ridden by Jóhann K. Ragnarsson. She got 8,01 for confirmation and 7,73 for riding abilities and the total score of 7,84. For neck and withers she got 9 and 8,5 for hooves, tolt, trot, form under rider and slow gallop. Unfortunately, the pace was not ridden long enough to receive some caracters. We were very satisfied with her caracters, however, we are sure that she would score higher with more training. She has had some setbacs during the last two years. In 2010 she was badly struck in the horse disease and the year after she got a cut on one of her hind legs which delayed the training. Hátíð is the last offspring of Litla-Jörp and her father is Hrói from Skeiðháholti.

In May and June, Sigurbjörg Bára was in vocational training by Sigurdur Sigurdarson in Thjolfolfshagi. So she had´nt much time to help us with the horses. However, after Landsmót she trained the horses at Vorsabæ untill the school started on the 20th of August. Sigurbjörg Bára took part in the preliminary competition for Landsmót in the youngsters class. She did really good and got the scores of 8,42 and the right to participate in Landsmót. Landsmót was held in Reykjavik from the 25.of June to the 1.of July. At Landsmót Sigurbjörg Bára and Blossi nearly managed to get to the intermediary heats but the competition in the youngsters class was very hard with 90  really good competitors.

Our local horse club Smári held its annual competition on the 21. of July. Sigurbjörg Bára took part in two classes. In youngsters class she showed up with a new competition horse, Hátið from Vorsabæ 2. They ended up in 1st place with caracters of 8,57. She also received the price for dressage seat and control of the horse. In tolt where 18 competitors were listed, she rode Blossi. In the preliminary rounds she got 2nd place and in the finals she ended also in seocond place. Ólafur Ásgeirsson got the 1st place with the great stallion Stígandi from Stóra-Hofi. But it is worth mentioning that we own two young horses sired by Stígandi.

Sigurbjörg Bára also took part in the Competiton South at Hella. She competed in tolt with Blossi and made it to the B-finals which she won and ended up in 5th place in the A-finals.

At the end of July we went for a 3 days horse-riding along with our neighbours Ingvar, Svala and Elelina from Fjall and  Hermann and his helping hands from Efri Brunavellir. All in all there were 74 horses in the riding tour. The first day we rode up to As in Gnupverjahreppur where we kept the horses for the night. The day after we rode to a litle hut called Klettur which is in the highland pasture where we stayed over the night after a good barbeque. On the third day we rode all the way back to Vorsabaer. The horses were very high spirited on the way back and we really had to work hard in keeping everything under control.

At the end of August a good friend of ours Nanna and her boy friend Mads came for a visit and stayed for a few days. Nanna worked at our farm in the winter of 2007 and has visited us a several times after that. The young lovebirds went for a rides and hiking tours. For instance they climed up to Vörðufell and camped there for one night. We had a really good time with Nanna and Mats and hope to see them again soon.

Most of our breeding mares were with our young stallion Hreyfill this summer. Forseti was here also and got quite a lot of breeding mares from other farms. We also took mares to other stallions, Stæll from Miðkot, Glóðafeykir from Halakot , Þröstur from Efri-Gegnishólum, Hrymur Hofi and Loki from Selfossi.

Our son Jón Emil started music school in the beginning of September. He moved from his youth home and rents an apartment in Reykjavík along with his two nephews and niece. During the 2 past years Jón Emil has worked as a carpenter in our neighborhood. He is also a member of the pop group Dynfari so he has travelled a lot to Reykjavik during the years. We do really miss him but luckily he visits us every now and then.

Our daughter Margrét is studying to become a stylist. In her final assignment she had to direct a fashion photapraphy. The project took place in Vorsabæ on a cold spring day in April. The scene was at the old sheep barn ruins and in the glade near the farm. Everything went well in the and she got good caracters for the project.

In November Margrét got her father to take part in a music video for the heavy metal groop Skálmöld. Björn was dressed up as a viking riding our mare Stalla. As one can imagine Björn performed as a natural born actor. The camera man was Bowen Staines who also filmed a music video for the group Solstafir which was choosen the best music vieeo of the year 2012.

On the 15.th of September the sheep round up at Reykir (Reykjaréttir) took place. All our sheep are kept in pasture nearby our farm so we do not have to gather them from the highlands. However, the round up is something which we never miss. Margrét came with her family and our friends Gunna and Gonsi also. They all steyed for two nights. We also got a visit from Ingimar and Emilia from Hólaborg who came driving with their big horse trailer. Seven of us rode to Reykjaréttir but others came with a car. After the round up we all went back to Vorsabæ 2 where we had broth (tradional Icelandic meat soup) and enjoyed ourselves singing and drinking some beer.

This summer our guest house was nearly fully booked. Many of our guests also wanted to watch our domestic animals  or go horse riding.

During the year we have had some groups of tourists for a visit. We have shown them our horse stable and put up a horse show where we explain for them the gaits of the icelandic horse. Our guests also show a lot of interest in our colourful sheep and goats. Many of our visitors are farmers from Finland which show a lot of interest in our farm.

After the tourist season our good friends Gudmundur Hermannsson and Gudrún Bjarnþórsdóttir,( Gonsi and Gunna) invited us to stay with them in their summer cottage which is located in Asparvík in the north west of Iceland. We stayed there for 2 days in good hospitality and went for short tours to look at the magnificient scenery.

We also visited the biggest goat farm at Háafell in Iceland where we fetched 3 young goats, two bucks and one doe to breed with our stock. We put the goats in the back of our car as the picture shows.

We got a help from an artisian to make yarn from the goat wool. So now Stefanía has begun to knit gloves from the product.

We got the news that Árvakur frá Vorsabæ 2 was Dutch champion in T3. He is son to Hviða frá Nýjabæ and Forseti from Vorsabæ 2.

In November we had a foal show in our indoor riding arena. This time our newly established society The Horse Enthusiasts Club Glaumur was responsible for the show. As many as 25 foals were registered into two groups male and female. We showed two foals and one of them got 3rd place in the group of male foals. The name of the foal is Kappi sired by Snerpa and Kinnskær from Selfossi. First place took Erpir bred by Gunnlaugur at Blesastaðum 1a. In the group of female foals Nóta bred by Hermann Karlsson at Brúnavöllum got the 1st prize. The judge  Óðinn Örn Jóhannsson carried out his task with exellence. The audience selected Erpir the best foal.

In December our stallion Demantur was exported to his new owner in France, Pierrick. He had visited us in November and bought him. Demantur was trained a litle bit last autumn. He will become 4 years old next spring and is very big and beautiful and really mature for his age. Demantur is sired by  Snerpa from Vorsabæ 2 and Hágangur from Narfastöðum.

News 2011

A lot of things have been going on in Vorsabaer this past year. In the coming pages we will bring up the most memorable ones.

Birthday of Birnir Snaer.

On the sixth of January we celebrated our grand son´s 2 years birthday.

Birnir Snær

Birnir Snær with his grandmother and great-grandmothers,

In late January Lisbeth Hven from Denmark started working for us and stayed with us for the next three months. She and Jon Emil did a great job and took care off the animals when we was on the trip in France and Germany.

Lísbeth and Hrefna

In the beginning of February our annual horse roundup took place. On that day our friends and relatives come to help us deworm the horses, cut their hooves and detangle the manes and tales of our stud.

Our daughter, Sigurbjorg Bara took part in all 3 winther games held by the local horse club, Smari. She rode her mare, Silfurdis from Vorsabaer. They did a great job, in the first and seocond tournament they ended up in first place and in the third one they took seocond place. The total scores gave them the the 1st place in the tournament.

Sigurbjorg Bara also took part in a special points tournament for the young riders of three local clubs, Smari, Logi and Trausti. There she ended up in 3rd place. She rode Silfurdis in 4 gait, tölt and special round up competition. In five gait she rode Hrefna from Vorsabaer.

Here you can watch video of Sigurbjorg and Hrefna.

In the begining of April we went to visit our friends Sophie and Martin who live in the North of France. Sophie used to work for us some years ago and has bought some horses from us during the years. We had a great time, Sophie and Martin drove us around and showed us the most interesting places in the neighborhood. They also took us horse riding in the woods which was new to us.

On our way to France we visited our friends in Germany who have bought horses from us. We got a warm welcome and were well treated . We like to thank our friends for a good hosbitality during our visit.

Goats. 3 goats gave birth to 3 kids.

The lambing season started on the 9th of May and we got a lot of healthy little lambs. We got a lot of visitors some of whom stayed in our summer house and took part in the everyday life at our farm.

In June a preliminary round for Landsmot was held by some of the horse clubs in the South of Iceland. Sigurbjorg participated in the teenage classes with Blossi and Forseti. She took first place on Forseti with the total score of 8,41 and 3rd place on Blossi with the total score of 8,31. As Forseti had to tend to mares at Vorsabaer Sigurbjorg and Blossi got a ticket to Landsmot.

The whole family took to Landsmot where Sigurbjorg competed on Blossi. They did well but not well enough to get to the finals. It was a good Landsmot although the weather was rather cold.

Sigurbjörg Bara and Blossi

In June two trainees, Emma and Rebecca from Dillegård in Sweden, came to work at Vorsabaer. They were very enthusiastic  and hard-working . They cared for the animals while we were at Landsmot  and did a great job.

In July we went for a horse trip along with our friend Hermann at Efri-Brunavellir and his staff. We rode up to Gnupverjahreppur past the farm Hlid and crossed the river Laxa and kept the horses at Solheimar over the night. The day after we rode towards Vorsabaer along the beautiful west bank of Laxá. We got tremendous good weather and the horses in their best condition althoug they were very powerful on the way back.

The haymaking went well thanks to the good weather this summer.

The local horsemeeting took place in the middle of August. Sigurborg rode Blossi in Gædingakeppni B and ended up in third place. In Tölt she competed in the highest class and got 5th place after a hard competition. She also rode Hrefna in Gædingakeppni A . Unfortunarely, the gallop went wrong so they did not make it to the finals.

Stefania, along with friends and neighbours,  rode around the land where Olafur Tvennumbruni settled in agent time between the rivers Thjorsa and Hvita. Farmers and farm people  from nearby farms took part in this  two days ride. In the end there was a barbeque in the stable at Husatoftir where our friends Astrun and Adalsteinn live.

In August we got a trainee from Sweden, Fia and at the end of the month her fellow countrywoman Elin Vidberg came to train for us. Elin stayed until mid of November.

Elin was very fond off Freyr and before she went home she bought him. She helped us also to sell some horses.

Elin and Aþenu, Fia and Ton.

The weather last autumn was rather bad, heavy rain and at the end of November it started snowing.

So we stabled the sheep and had them sheared.

Our son Jon Emil has been working as a carpender, however, in his spare time he plays the drums  or the guitar in the band Dynfari. Every week-end he drives to Reykjavik to play with his band. Last winter Dynfari released a CD which has already sold-out.

We  got a lot of visitors last year. In May and June children from primary schools and kindergartens came to watch the new born lambs. We also got a visit of  some elderly people from an American photo club taking pictures of the new born foals, lambs and kids. Sigurbjorg Bara mounted a horse and showed them the various gaits of the Icelandic horse on our oval track. A group of girls came from Reykjavik to play some tricks on their friend who was going to marry a young countryman. Therefor, she had to learn the various farm work. We also took our visitors, some of whom stayed in our sommer house,  for shorter or longer riding tours. Then we got some tourists who came specially to take part in the daily farm work.

Last year the Icelandic Farm Hollidays got the Export Award given by the president of Iceland Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson. On that occation we were invited along with other members to Bessastadir where we got some pictures taken of us along with presidential couple.

Goodbye and thanks for the year.

News 2010

Our tourism business has developed increasingly this year. From the beginning of May until the end of September our guesthouse has nearly been fully booked. Most of the visitors are conventional tourists exploiting the wonders of Iceland. We also had some visitors who´s intention was to experience the country life and to take part in the daily work on the farm, see the new born lambs, go horseback riding etc. We had for example four female visitors from Sweden who stayed in our guesthouse for a week in September and went horseback riding with us every single day and ended on going with us to the sheep gathering.

Volcanic eruption and  the climate.

The volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull did not affect our farm at Vorsabær2 although we could easily follow it from our farm. Every day we could watch its significance from afar. The wind direction was favorable so we did not get any ash on our fields, however, right at the end of the eruption and soon after it stopped some ash fell on our land but it did not harm us in any way.

The climate has been exceptionally warm all last year. We only experienced al little snow in February and March. The summer was warm so the growth was well above average so we are well off with hay for this winter. The autumn was mild and the winter came in slowly without any drastic chilliness.

Horse breeding

In the year 2010 some 13 foals were born on the farm, 5 mares and 8 studs. We take great pleasure in watching these foals and see them developing and flourish.

We took 17 mares to stallions last summer of which13 are confirmed to be in foal with the following stallions: Forseti from Vorsabær2, Hreyfill from Vorsabær2, Stigandi from Stóra-Hof, Kjarni from Þjóðólfshagi, Sveinn-Hervar from Þúfa, Mjölnir from Hlemmiskeið and Brimnir from Ketilstaðir.

Horse training and horse disease

Normally we are training our horses all year around, however the horse disease affected us as all other horse breeders and trainers. For that reason we could not work with our horses by any means from middle of May until the end of August. The disease had great influences on everything concerning the horses, training, competition, trail riding, and horse sales.  Luckily none of our horses got really sick and all of them seem to have recovered.

In the first months of the year 2010 our daughter Sigurbjörg took part in local horse competitions both with Silfurdis and Blossi. She ended up in 2nd to 4th place although she aimed for the 1st place as always. Last summer Sigurbjörg trained horses on the farm Bræðratunga for nearly 2 months to get more experience and knowledge in horse training. We always hire young people to help us with the training and other things to be done on a farm. Among them were 4 girls from Sweden, one Icelandic boy and recently we had a girl from Germany working for us. It has been a great pleasure to have these youngsters working for us besides there is always a lot to do on our farm.

.Stallions which we have sold

In the beginning of the year we sold the stallion Stirnir which is born in 2007. Our friends Sophie and Martin in France bought him. Stirnir will definitely have a good future in with his new owners and has already started breeding with mares in France. Stirnir is sired by Stáli from Kjarr and his mother is Kolbrún from Vorsabær2.

The stallion Segull from Hátún was sold to Sweden. He is born in 2003 and we bought him as a foal from Hátún. His new owner is Elin Vidberg but she worked for us at Vorsabær2 for a few weeks and was so fascinated by Segull that she ended up buying him. Elin and Segull have taken part in some competitions in Sweden with good results and deserved reasonable attention.

Last summer we sold to young stallions born in 2009, Hrymur and Gýmir, to the Netherlands and they were transported abroad in the beginning of September. The new owner is Mrs. Wendy van Olpen.
